Hardships and Rebus Sic Stantibus
Where after the conclusion of a contract an unforeseeable event or set of circumstances makes performance (e.g. payment) excessively burdensome for your side of the contract, thaw law might give you the right to withdraw from the contract or, in some jurisdictions, to force the other side of the contract to renegotiate the terms
Rebus Sic Stantibus should not be invoked lightly. It will protect you only if, as a result of the change in circumstances, the contract becomes egregiously unfair. If you have tacitly assumed contractual risks, the doctrine will not apply
Rebus sic stantibus can take different names depending on the law controlling your contract. For example, in Italy it is known as rescission for excessive onerousness or leasio enormis
English law and other common law jurisdictions do not follow the doctrine
